As a fan of One Piece and someone who interacts with anime fans daily, I have, of course, closely followed the discussion surrounding the new season. New opinions are constantly being read online – and it is precisely this mix of enthusiasm and criticism that makes the series so interesting.
Many fans online are surprised at how well the adaptation works. It is often praised that the series respects the spirit of Eiichiro Oda's original work. The characters feel familiar, the world feels alive, and it's clear that a lot of effort went into the production. This is not a given, especially for an anime live-action adaptation.
On the other hand, there are also critical voices from the community. Some fans find that certain scenes are told too quickly compared to the anime or manga. Others criticize that characters like Sabo or Brook appear much earlier than they do in the anime or manga. Scenes or hints that only appear much later in the original are sometimes shown earlier in the live-action.
At the same time, there are also fans who do not see this as a point of criticism, but rather as a plus. In their opinion, it helps to build up the story better and integrate certain characters into the plot earlier.
From conversations in the shop and many discussions on the internet, one thing stands out to me above all: the expectations for One Piece are huge. The story has accompanied fans for decades, which is why every new adaptation is observed particularly closely.
Despite the criticisms, one opinion seems to be gaining ground: For many, the series on Netflix is one of the best anime live-action adaptations to date. It may not be perfect, but it shows that a live-action version of One Piece can actually work.
For me personally, it's particularly exciting to see how much passion there is behind the community. Whether online or in conversations in the shop – One Piece still causes discussions, enthusiasm and sometimes criticism. And that's exactly what shows how big and vibrant this world still is today. 🏴☠️
